Independence Day is quickly approaching, and an astonishing 46.9 million people are estimated to be on vacation during the 4th of July in 2019! If you’re one of the lucky ones traveling this year with Sundance Vacations, you will want to check out the list below to know where to make plans to view our lights of freedom. Fireworks are known to be big, bright and beautiful, but do you know why we use fireworks to celebrate or when we even started celebrating?
Our very first Independence Day celebration was held in Philadelphia on July 4th, 1777. We were still in the middle of the Revolutionary War against Britain. The fireworks display was supposed to help raise spirits and morale during the war. People got word of the first fireworks celebration and other displays began to take place in other areas of the country.
You might ask yourself why we celebrate by lighting up the American sky with fireworks. The answer is simple, because John Adams wanted us to! Our Founding father once wrote a letter to his wife stating; “I am apt to believe that Independence Day will be celebrated, by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this continent to the other from this time forward forever more.”
Last year, Americans spent more than $279,966,624 on fireworks alone! Not to mention the $7 billion on cookouts to celebrate our Independence Day! If only John Adams could see us now! If you’re not looking to break the bank by purchasing fireworks, you might want to go check out a local display!
