Sundance Vacations Recipes: St. Louis Toasted Ravioli

Over the last few weeks we have been taking a culinary adventure through a lot of amazing destinations.  This week, we head to the Show-Me State of Missouri for a local favorite that is great as an appetizer or main dish!  That dish, of course, is St. Louis Toasted Ravioli!

Sundance Vacations, which has a destination in Branson, Missouri, — just about three hours from St. Louis — loves to share information about the places we send our travelers to.  That is one of the reasons why we created this section, to showcase all of the different places you can travel and to illustrate the awesomely-unique things that each destination has to offer.

Although, the Toasted Raviolis are made famous by the city of St. Louis, these delicious, fried treats can be found all over the state.  From restaurants to bars and even right at home in people’s kitchens.

Last week we saw how an ordinary jalapeno popper could be tweaked in order to make a delicious new treat, this recipe is very similar in the sense that you’ll be taking something you may use normally and putting a new twist on it.  Everyone is used to eating ravioli along with sauce, but cooking them this way makes for more of a finger food that everyone will love.

Total prep time for this dish is 15 minutes and the overall time will take you a total of 30 minutes.  The recipe will use half a bag of frozen ravioli, which should make enough for six servings.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons of whole milk
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional)
  • 1/2 (25 ounce) package frozen cheese ravioli or beef ravioli
  • 3 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 (16 ounce) jar of your favorite marinara/spaghetti sauce

Preparation

Combine the milk and egg in a small bowl.  Then place the breadcrumbs and salt in a shallow bowl.  Dip ravioli in milk mixture and then dredge it in the breadcrumbs.

In a large saucepan, heat marinara/spaghetti sauce over medium heat until bubbling. Reduce the heat to simmer to keep the sauce warm.

In a large heavy pan, pour the vegetable oil to depth of at least two inches.  Heat the oil over medium heat until a small amount of breading sizzles and turns brown.  Once the oil is ready, fry the ravioli, only a few at a time, for one minute on each side or until golden.  Have a plate ready with paper towels to help drain the oil off.  Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese while they are hot and serve immediately with the already prepared, hot marinara/spaghetti sauce.  Enjoy!
