2017 Solar Eclipse

2017 Solar Eclipse

The 2017 Solar Eclipse is just a week away! Checkout which Sundance Vacations resorts will have the best views!

Its been 38 years since the last solar eclipse happened in America, but 99 years since the last total solar eclipse, and on August 21, 2017 it will happen again! A total eclipse is when the moon completely blocks out the sun, and stretches of the United States will be in complete darkness as the moon casts its shadow. During an eclipse like this, the temperature drops, light takes on a spooky filtered effect, and the corona of the sun is visible as a spectacular aura around the moon, but just for a moment.

Before we get into the list, it’s important that you know you must have protective eye-wear to view an eclipse safely! A lot of people are probably wondering what the big deal is about wearing special protective glasses and not just normal sunglasses. Well, the reason is because looking directly at the sun is unsafe, except during the brief total phase of a solar eclipse. When the moon entirely blocks the sun’s bright face, which will happen only within the narrow path of totality. It only takes 30 to 60 seconds of staring at the eclipse to cause retinal damage. Since it is painless, a lot of the time people don’t realize the damage happened until they have problems with their vision.

The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses” or hand-held solar viewers. Homemade filters or ordinary sunglasses, even very dark ones, are not safe for looking at the sun. Make sure to refer to the American Astronomical Society Reputable Vendors of Solar Filters & Viewers page for a list of manufacturers and authorized dealers of eclipse glasses and handheld solar viewers verified to be compliant with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard for such products.
