Maryland is certainly one of Sundance Vacations’ more popular destinations on the eastern seaboard. We offer a number of great accommodations in the state, including places inland, near Oakland, Maryland, and the ever-popular beach destination, Ocean City.
When it comes to food, Maryland is known for one thing above all else, the Crab Cake.
Although New England and the Pacific Northwest have their own versions of the popular dish, Maryland Crab Cakes are mostly made with Blue Crab meat, often considered the best tasting Crab available. Plus, the Blue Crab are readily accessible as they are native to the Chesapeake Bay and surround Atlantic Ocean waters. Nearly every restaurant, bar and food place serve up their own version of the tasty seafood dish, heck, you can even get Crab Cakes at the Baltimore Orioles game inside Oriole Park at Camden Yards. As you can see, Maryland takes Crab Cakes very seriously!
Our Sundance Vacations Travel Inspired Recipe for Maryland Crab Cakes are a slight twist on the original. They are made with Panko Breadcrumbs and add a bit of jalapeno for a little more kick. Total prep time is about 40 minutes for these delicious treats and this recipe makes six servings.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup mayonnaise
- 2 scallions, thinly sliced
- 1 large egg, lightly beaten
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice plus wedges for garnish
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Old Bay Seasoning
- 1/2 jalapeño, seeded, finely chopped (Can leave out or substitute with red/green pepper if you aren’t a fan of spicy foods)
- 1 pound lump crabmeat, picked over
- 1 1/4 cup panko (Japanese breadcrumbs), divided
- 1 tablespoon thinly sliced chives
- 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1 head Bibb lettuce
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
Preparation
Whisk the mayonnaise, scalions, beaten egg, Dijon mustard, lemon juice, Old Bay Seasoning and jalapeno ingredients in a medium bowl. Add the crab meat and fold to blend. Stir in 3/4 cup panko, chives, salt, and pepper. Divide into six equal portions. Form each into about 1″-thick patties. Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes. Line a platter with lettuce leaves.
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Place the remaining 1/2 cup Panko on a plate. Coat each of the cakes with Panko. Fry until golden brown and crisp, 3-4 minutes per side. Arrange atop lettuce and serve with lemon wedges. Enjoy!
