How to Prepare for the Sun!

Sundance Vacations Girl Putting on Sunscreen

Almost everyone has heard that too much sun is bad for you, but do you know why?

Scientifically speaking, it’s too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or sunbeds that is bad for you.

But what is UV?

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a type of radiation that is produced by the sun and some artificial sources. The sun’s UV radiation is the major cause of sunburn, premature ageing, eye damage and skin damage leading to skin cancer.

There are two main kinds of UV, UVB and UVA.

UVB is the more common one which is responsible for the majority of sunburns.
UVA penetrates deep into the skin, ages the skin, but contributes much less towards sunburn.
There is a third type of UV ray, UVC, which could be the most dangerous of all, but it is completely blocked out by the ozone layer and doesn’t reach the earth’s surface.

How to protect yourself from the sun!

Choose the right sunscreen.

Sunscreen with a Sun Protect Factor (SPF) is one of the best ways to protect yourself from the sun. Most people should use SPF 30+ and make sure it has both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) protection. It’s best to apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside so your skin has time to absorb it, and reapply it every two hours. Don’t want to buy sunscreen? Check out our DIY video here!

To help determine what SPF is best for you, consider the following:

Other than sunscreen, there are other ways to protect yourself as well!

Stay in the shade.

The first way you can protect yourself from the sun is by staying in the shade. When you’re outside for a full day in the sun, constant, direct exposure to the sun’s rays is never good. You can greatly reduce the chance for skin damage by staying in the shade because it will limit the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays.

Wear a daily moisturizer.

If you’re like some who don’t want to put sunscreen on your face, there are many moisturizers with SPF. The skin on your face is more sensitive to sun damage than the rest of your body so it’s important to have good protection. Make sure to use moisturizers with an SPF factor of at least 30. You can find many moisturizers at drug stores with SPF, like ones from this list.

Dress Appropriately.

On days you know the sun will be bright and shining make sure you wear a hat to protect your scalp and sunglasses to protect your eyes. Not only will these help protect you, but they are also a great accessory for your outfit!

Now that you know how to prepare for the sun, your beach check list could be that much easier! Remember, the sun is strongest from approximately 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. so make sure to protect yourself!
