Must See: The TSA’s Instagram Page

The Transportation Security Administration, or TSA as you probably know it, has only really been around for a little more than a decade now.  Created as a response to the attacks of September 11, 2001, this agency is charged with keeping Americans safe, especially traveling Americans.

In this day and age it’s really no surprise that the government, companies and other industries are heavily embedded in social media channels.  However, the TSA takes it to a whole new level, which is both scary and interestingly awesome at the same time, with their Instagram account.  (Read more about the Instagram App and how you can download it on one of our more recent posts right here on our Sundance Vacations Travel Blog: “10 Best Travel Apps for 2015”)

First, some background for those who may not know.  Instagram, which allows users to post photos and connect with over 150 million users worldwide, has become one of the most popular and fastest-growing social media outlets to date.  Since its initial release in 2010, the smartphone app has quickly become a force in the social media world.  It has not only changed the way that people take photos, but has entirely changed the photography industry too.

The TSA has taken advantage of this amazing app and put it to use in a rather thought-provoking way.  Although the administration uses it to announce blog posts on their site, information about their TSA Pre-Check services and what you can and cannot carry-on, they also use it to show examples of what NOT to bring with you on a trip to the airport.

In a constant stream they share, sometimes multiple times per day, photos of things like weapons and other such disallowed objects that people try to smuggle aboard airplanes.  False bottom jars, knives disguised as lipstick containers, stun guns that look like cellphones, swords, grenades and guns hidden just about everywhere you can imagine are just a sample of what you will see in their Instagram feed.  You’ll also get to see some of the service/bomb sniffing dogs that work for the TSA too.  It’s definitely worth a look and follow on the app.  Although it really isn’t funny, you have to wonder what some of these people are thinking trying to bring some of these objects onto a plane.  To check out their channel visit them here: “TSA Instagram”
