Is it EVEN POSSIBLE to Stay Fit While on Vacation?
It’s the start of a New Year, and as usual, everyone is making resolutions. At the top of the customary list is losing a few pounds and getting in shape.
As is also typical, many of us start the New Year by planning our vacations. This naturally raises the question…how can we get fit (or stay fit) while traveling? Is it possible to avoid returning from vacation with extra pounds around the middle….especially after eating out and relaxing lazily on the beach or by the pool for a week (or longer)? YES, IT IS!!!
Just a few ideas…
Take the stairs. Skip the elevator and take the stairs instead. Something as easy as climbing stairs can have a considerable effect on your daily activity level. When you calculate a week of stair climbing, the benefit is well worth it.
Instead of renting a car, walk. Take a walking tour. Many vacation destinations offer a variety of walking tours. Spend a day walking around a museum.
Take a hike. Adventure activities aren’t everyone’s idea of fun, but hiking can be customized to fit anyone’s stamina level. Plus, what better way is there to see the spectacular sites of an unfamiliar destination? Even most busy cities have hiking opportunities.
Go for a swim. Whether you’re at the beach or you have access to a pool, swimming is a great form of exercise.
Rent a bike. Take a bike tour or just ride around town or the mountains for an hour. According to Fodor’s, “It is estimated that there are more than 300 organized bike-rental programs worldwide with a fleet of over 250,000 bikes.”
Be mindful of what you eat. Tasting local cuisine is one of the many delights of traveling. Sadly, most travelers overeat while they are on vacation. A recent study found that 60 percent of travelers gained up to five pounds on a two-week vacation, most attributing the weight gain to larger portions and overeating. Allow yourself one little treat per day, so you don’t feel like you’re missing out on the experience, but try to eat well for the rest of your meals that day.
Traveling can be stressful. And, most getaways are all about relaxation after you reach your destination, but sometimes, a vacation focused on getting or staying fit can be exactly what we need.
Good Luck getting or staying in shape!
