For as long as Americans remember, we’ve always celebrated the Fourth of July with beautiful firework shows in public and residential areas. But why do we celebrate Independence Day with thousands of small explosions?
On July 4, 1776, the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from England, an event which eventually led to the formation of the United States. Each year on July 4th, also known as Independence Day, Americans celebrate this historic event.
Before the Declaration of Independence was signed, John Adams envisioned fireworks as part of the festivities. In a letter to Abigail Adams on July 3, 1776, he wrote that the occasion should be commemorated “with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” The first Independence Day fireworks were set off on July 4, 1777. By 1783 a large variety of fireworks were available to the public.
